Google releases emergency update for Chrome Browser to fix multiple security vulnerabilities

Google has announced a new Chrome update that addresses a range of security flaws in the popular browser, which is used by over 2.6 billion people worldwide. After a zero-day vulnerability was found that hackers were already exploiting, the update was released as an emergency solution.

The latest Chrome update, version 96.0.4664.110, resolves five flaws, four of which are high-rated and one of which is essential. One of the four high-rated bugs allows attackers to target Chrome’s JavaScript engine and run code on a target computer.

“Google is clearly aware that a CVE-2021-4102 vulnerability has been identified in the wild,” the company stated. “The stable channel for Windows, Mac, and Linux has been upgraded to 96.0.4664.110, which will roll out over the following days/weeks,” it said. “The extended stable channel for Windows and Mac has also been upgraded to 96.0.4664.110, which will roll out over the next days/weeks,” says the company.

CVE-2021-4099, CVE-2021-4100, CVE-2021-4101, and CVE-2021-4102 are the five vulnerabilities that have been resolved. The technical details of the five vulnerabilities aren’t publicly recognized, but it’s probable that Google will make them public when all users have received the new version that fixes them.

Why should you update to Chrome 96.0.4664.110 immediately?

The government’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) recently issued a warning to all Chrome users, urging them to upgrade as soon as possible.

“Multiple vulnerabilities have been detected in Google Chrome that might be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target machine,” according to a report released by CERT.in on December 14.

According to the study, “the vulnerability (CVE-2021-4102) is being actively exploited in the wild.”

Users may update their Google Chrome browser by clicking Help/About Google Chrome from the three-dot menu on the top right. It will appear here if the update is available in your location. Users can wait and try again later if it doesn’t work.
